The sun shone dimly through the clouds as a cool breeze swept the Shy Basin. The day was coming to a near soon, with only a few more hours of sunlight left before the night took hold of the realm.
A lone lioness quietly stood in the tall grasses, examining the nearby prey. Imani's stomach gave a soft growl, telling her it was time to eat. She looked around at the prey available. Some far too large for her to take down herself. Imani prayed for something like a gazelle or young foal or calf of some kind; something she could kill with some about of ease. Her ears pivoted at the sound of a wildebeest; a very small herd of wildebeest. And, within that herd, a calf... the perfect target.
Imani went into action quickly, crouching low in the tall gasses and moving herself downwind of the prey. She easily hid in the grasses as the grasses matched her fur color. Slowly, she crept towards the prey and waited for her moment to strike.
Everything was perfectly set, the prey was unaware of her presence. She tensed as she came closer to the striking zone, it was almost time. As she prepared to charge, her muscles tensed and she made a leap towards the foal. Immediately, the herd began to run, the mother sticking with the foal as the tried to outrun her. She gained ground easily on the young foal, who became to slow. She chased for a few more moments before leaping towards the foal; her claws digging into its hindquarters. The calf made various noises as it was brought down by Imani, who quickly made a move to the calf's mouth to suffocate it.
She held on tightly, waiting for the calf to die. But, out of the corner of her eye Imani saw the mother come back for the calf. The lioness stayed where she was, hoping she could kill the calf before the mother got to her. The mother was a few feet away, and Imani knew she had to run. Reluctantly she released the calf and started to run; however, she didn't run fast enough as the mother's horns met Imani's hind leg. Imani let out a growl as the cut was made, she tried to run faster until the wildebeest stopped and returned to her calf, who probably wouldn't survive the night.
She crept to safety, to a bushy area with small outcropping rocks that made temporary shelters. Before looking for a place to hide, Imani looked at her wound. It was a gash, not very deep. But, Imani would need food soon if she wanted any chance to make a recovery. She stayed there for a few minutes, calming herself and cleaning the wound.
Hopefully no undesirables would find her in this condition.
